After appearances in olive green (1988), red (1991), blue (1993) and purple (1997), the Round Kiwi was issued in glorious gold in 2000, a fitting hue to celebrate the start of the new millennium. The stamp features the kiwi, New Zealand’s national symbol and a bird found nowhere else in the world. This rare animal with a distinctive curved beak and plump body cannot fly and, being nocturnal, is rarely seen in daylight. Its population is carefully monitored and protected in some parts of New Zealand.
