Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The country remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Over the last 15 years, the islands have become a major freight transhipment point, financial centre, and tourist destination.
The Maltese Archipelago is situated in the Mediterranean sea consisting of three separate islands - Malta (390 km²), Gozo (65 km²) and Comino (2.5 km²).
