Samoa lies in the heart of the South Pacific, 2,400 kilometres north of New Zealand. Four of its nine volcanic mountains are inhabited - Apolima, Manono, Sava'ai, the largest, and Upolu, home to 72 per cent of the population, which totals in excess of 172,000 people.
A German protectorate until the commencement of World War I, the German authorities surrendered to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 29 August 1914. Military administration was maintained until 1920, when the islands were placed under New Zealand mandate by the League of Nations. Samoa was then administered by New Zealand until its independence on 1 January 1962.
