The Kingdom of Tonga is the last Polynesian Kingdom featuring a unique culture, friendly people in an idyllic South Pacific island setting. Tonga is located in the South Pacific Ocean, North East of New Zealand and in the proximity of Fiji and Samoa.
The archipelago of 'The Friendly Islands' was united into a Polynesian kingdom in 1845. It became a constitutional monarchy in 1875 and a British protectorate in 1900. Tonga acquired its independence in 1970 and became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The establishment of an organised postal service in Tonga occurred in 1886. The first issue of Tongan stamps bore a portrait of King George Tupou.
