New coloured Anzac 50c coin available online to the public today

24 February 2015

New Zealand’s first ever coloured coin, officially launched earlier this month to mark 100 years since the Gallipoli landings, is available to the public for pre-order today.

One million of the coins have been minted and will be available in PostShops and Kiwibank branches nationwide on Monday 23 March.

Interest in the coins has been extremely high and people who are concerned they may miss out are able to pre-order their coin at from today.

Present and former members of the New Zealand Defence Force and the Returned and Services Association have been able to pre-order the coins since the launch at Government House in Wellington on 10 February and can still do so. So far, more than 100,000 coins have been pre-ordered.

The coin’s design was approved by military experts at NZDF, the NZRSA and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage and has received a great deal of positive feedback from the public and former and serving Defence Force personnel.

People can order up to twenty 50 cent coins or two rolls of 20 coins. The coins will be sold at face value and standard courier charges will apply to all orders.

The coin

The coin features a New Zealand and Australian soldier standing back to back with their heads bowed in remembrance. The mangopare (hammerhead shark) pattern symbolises strength and determination, and the silver fern reflects New Zealand’s national identity. To represent New Zealand’s national colours, the mangopare is coloured white on the coin, with the background coloured black
