New Zealand Post puts spin on Longest Reigning Monarch stamps and coin

11 September 2015

9 September 2015 marks a significant milestone for the monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II becoming the longest reigning British Monarch, surpassing her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. To commemorate this historic occasion, New Zealand Post has created a seven stamp issue that looks at the vast span of time that Queen Elizabeth II has reigned as well as creating the world’s first rotating coin.

“Queen Elizabeth II actually became New Zealand’s longest reigning monarch some time ago, as Britain’s sovereignty over New Zealand became effective a few years into Queen Victoria’s reign,” said Simon Allison, Head of Stamps and Coins, “Queen Elizabeth has been our sovereign for over 63 years, while Queen Victoria’s rule over New Zealand was only just over 60 years long. The stamps provide a sense of what has happened in New Zealand during the Queen’s reign and how times have changed during her lifetime.

“We wanted to include the events that people would remember, all the way from the 50s through to today. As it’s impossible to cover everything that has happened during her reign, New Zealand Post worked closely with a number of organisations to ensure the stamps reflected who we are as a nation.”

The seven stamps in the issue feature photographs of Queen Elizabeth II from each decade throughout her reign alongside typographic depictions of the various events. Also available in the issue is a first day cover, a miniature sheet, a miniature sheet first day cover and a highly collectable presentation pack. The presentation pack includes copy specially written by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage.

When asked about the coin, Simon said it was one of the most ambitious coins New Zealand Post had set out to make. “When we came up with the idea, we had many ideas of how it could work, but it was an intensive research and development process that lead to the successful delivery of such a creative coin experience never seen before. Like the stamps, the coin has been officially approved by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and we feel it’s a fitting collectable celebrating the span of Queen Elizabeth’s reign.”

The world's first rotating coin features two gold-plated New Zealand effigies, her 1953 portrait by Mary Gillick and the official Portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The 1oz silver proof inner section rotates inside a non-precious-metal outer rim and has a limited worldwide mintage of 2,015.

This issue is available for pre order from 7 September 2015 online at
