Serving up classic Kiwi dishes on stamps

5 June 2015

From cheese rolls to bacon and egg pie, there are lots of classic Kiwi dishes we all know and love. New Zealand Post has collaborated with New Zealand artist Jason Kelly to create a mouth-watering retro-themed stamp issue titled Kiwi Kitchen that’s sure to inspire.

“Jason Kelly has really taken this theme and brought it to life through his signature quirky style,” said Simon Allison, New Zealand Post Head of Stamps and Coins, “Whether it’s as classic as pavlova or as simple as fairy bread, this stamp issue is bound to resonate with Kiwis and inspire nostalgia for these recipes.”

“I've found it quite an honour to paint this stamp art for New Zealand Post as I was a collector when I was a boy and still have my collection,” said Jason Kelly, artist of this issue of stamps, “Plus the subject matter is a great idea. Like a lot of Kiwi kids, I spent a lot of time helping my Mum bake classic kiwi recipes and I’ve lived on the diet I've painted on the artwork.”

Each of the 18 stamps has been individually painted on wooden panels, and together they make a truly unique sheet of stamps. Alongside this special stamp issue, New Zealand Post has created a limited run of tea towels featuring the stamp sheet imagery. This tea towel captures the classic look and feel of Jason Kelly’s style and celebrates the unique cuisine of New Zealand. It can be purchased for $10.00 alone, or $19.90 with the stamp sheet.

The stamp issue includes a stamp sheet with 18 x 80c stamps, a set of three first day covers and a tea towel. The issue is available for purchase from 1 July 2015 at all New Zealand Post Shops and REAL Aotearoa stores.

Pre-orders are being taken now through the Whanganui Collectables and Solutions Centre or online at nzpost.co.nz/stamps
