Swinging into the new year with 2016 Year of the Monkey

9 December 2015

New Zealand Post is celebrating the Chinese New Year in 2016 with new stamp collectables featuring the clever and mischievous monkey. For the first time, as well as stamps and gold-foiled collectables, New Zealand Post will be issuing a special gold-plated medallion.

“New Zealand’s multicultural nature is something to be celebrated, so we worked closely with design agency Asiaworks who did a fantastic job of incorporating the New Zealand and Chinese design elements,” said Simon Allison, Head of Stamps and Coins at New Zealand Post.

“We’re excited to be offering gold-plated medallions with our Chinese New Year collectables. The medallions and the gold-foiled stamp products really capture the fun spirit of the monkey zodiac sign and we anticipate they’ll be popular gifts for Chinese New Year.”

Included in this issue are four gummed stamps, a first day cover, a miniature sheet, a miniature sheet first day cover and a presentation pack. The presentation pack includes copy written by Bo Li from Asiaworks and looks at the zodiac sign of the monkey in greater detail. It also includes an intricate paper-cut monkey.

The gold-foiled stamp sheets are made from 24 carat, 99.9 gold foil. The large gold-foiled miniature sheet is presented in a gold frame, is individually numbered and is limited to just 128 worldwide. The smaller miniature sheet comes in a perspex display stand and is available either with gold stamps or coloured stamps. These collectables are replicas of the miniature sheet in the stamp issue and are not part of the official stamp programme. The gold-plated medallions are limited to just 999 worldwide and come with an individually numbered certificate that explains the significance of the Year of the Monkey.

The 2016 Year of the Monkey issue is available for purchase from 13 January 2016 at New Zealand PostShops. Pre-orders are being taken now through the Whanganui Collectables and Solutions Centre or online at nzpost.co.nz/YearoftheMonkey
